You leave at what feels like a sensible hour. You turn in, the boom gate does not lift, and you start the slow lap looking for a gap that is not there. Your 7:52 is now an 8:14, and you are parking on a side street you will worry about all day.
Here is the part that turns that morning around. You were probably queuing at the wrong car park.
It is not one carpark, it is three
Tallawong does not have a car park. It has three, P1, P2 and P3, and they are separate from one another.

Most people only ever meet one of them. You drive the way you always drive, you reach the first entry you come to, and if it is full that is the whole story. "Tallawong is full" gets said a lot. What is usually true is that one car park at Tallawong is full.
Look at the gap. Two of them are effectively gone and the third has hundreds of spaces sitting there. That is one afternoon and not a rule, so do not go planning your week around P3 specifically. The point is the spread: at any given moment the three are usually nothing like each other, and the one you can see from the road tells you nothing about the other two.
Check it before the driveway, not at the boom gate
Knowing there are three car parks only helps if you know which one has room on the morning you are actually running late.

More parking is coming
This is a good problem to have and it is being dealt with. A new multi storey car park has been announced for Tallawong with up to 1,100 extra spaces, part of a $160 million commitment to commuter parking across the northwest.
No opening date has been announced yet, so it does not help you tomorrow. But the pressure at Tallawong has been noticed and the answer is already funded, which is more than most parking complaints ever get.
Until it opens, three car parks is still better odds than most people realise. Most of us have only ever tried one of them.
